Silver Sixpence - Bridget's custom tea length 50s style wedding dress with sleeves

Lovely Bridget is one of my recent brides who I’m very excited to share some gorgeous wedding day images of!  It was really important for Bridget that her gown be simple yet stunning and that it was a style that she felt comfortable in for her relaxed wedding day. As we worked through designs, the “Audrey” design really made an impression on Bridget as well as the skirt of the “Betty” dress.  So I created a combination of these two… Read more »

There has been a flurry of paper patterns, thread and fabrics recently as I put together a very exciting new line for Silver Sixpence.  Skirts!!!  Yes I know the idea of separates for a bride is nothing new, although in the past it’s still been an overall gown, just with a separate corset bodice generally over a skirt. Now this is something really different…. just plain and simple skirts that as you can see can be teamed up with cute… Read more »

1950s Wedding Dress Design Inspiration

A while back I shared some happy snaps taken of the custom dress that I created for the gorgeous Eve’s high school formal.  She chose a design from a very rare 50s sewing pattern that featured Audrey Hepburn modelling the Givenchy design (McCall’s 3788): Her proud mum just sent me through some pictures of Eve all dressed up on the day for me to share with you all.   I think you will all agree that Eve looked absolutely stunning… Read more »

I recently had the pleasure of recreating an extremely rare (and very expensive if you were ever to get your hands on an original pattern which I just can’t justify for such a straight forward design) McCalls Givenchy pattern that was modelled by none other than Audrey Hepburn. Recently I posted some happy snaps of one of my Toowoomba brides 1950s inspired dresses here.  Kristen had fallen in love with Audrey Hepburns wedding dress from the movie Funny Face, so we came up with a dress and veil that was very much inspired by this dress. Kristen was kind enough to take the time to send in some of the most spectacular pictures from her wedding day in some amazing Toowoomba locations along with the story of her… Read more »

Here are a few happy snaps taken in my overcrowded work room of one of my recent custom gowns.  Kristen came to me via my mum after she read an SOS email requesting a dressmaker.  As fate may have it she was after an Audrey Hepburn inspired gown which is my specialty!!  Kristen is a Toowoomba girl (my home town!) so after several weekends of coming to Brisbane for fittings her dream finally became a reality. The gown is made… Read more »

Today’s dress inspiration is the Givenchy dress worn by Audrey Hepburn to the 1954 Oscars.  It is such a fun little number for a garden wedding and a night filled with dancing. British Vogue Online The entire dress has a sheer overlay with a flocked floral design that has a lovely modest high neckline at the front but then sneakily turns into little spaghetti straps at the back. Harper’s Bazaar The bodice and skirt is underlined in a strapless design… Read more »
