Where are you based and can I come and see some of your gowns in person?

I work from a studio in Milton (an inner city suburb) and open by appointment during business hours Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays as well as most Saturdays.   I have a small range of Silver Sixpence label samples, however as I specialise in working with brides to create their one of a kind vintage style dresses I don’t have a massive range to view and am not like a regular retail store.

 

How much do your custom bridal gowns cost?

Well as each custom design has so many variables I’m not able to provide a generic price list for custom made to measure gowns, however I have listed average prices inclusive of labour and fabric below. Please email me for any specific pricing enquiries.

In addition to custom gowns I also offer a small range of Silver Sixpence label made to order gowns.  These gowns can be made to a standard size and prices are listed on the linked page. All of these designs can also be made with a full made to measure service however additional costs apply.

 

I’d love to have a custom gown made by you, how far in advance should I book in?

As I only take on a very limited number of custom made to measure gowns at a time, to avoid disappointment I recommend booking in approximately 6-9 months in advance.  Depending on availability I can sometimes squeeze in custom designs made to a standard size without any in person fittings if I’m fully booked with made to measure clients.

 

I’ve never had a custom gown made for me. What is involved in the process?

Well firstly I offer a complimentary initial consultation of up to 30 minutes for us to meet in person, I can look at ideas that you have in mind and you can see some of my work in person.

The next step is to book in for a more in depth consultation if you’re requiring some professional advice on working through your custom design.  For this appointment I block out up to 1.5 hours of my day to dedicate completely to you and your dress ideas.  During this appointment I will go through designs that will flatter your shape, we can look at fabric options and work through the design so that by the end of the session I can give you a total price for the gown (provided you’ve made some firm decisions during that appointment on your dress ideas).  Provided a final design is reached during that appointment (sometimes it needs a little more time) I can then put together a computerised design sketch for your approval which is what I base my custom pattern on.  There is a fee of $120 for this session (payable via direct deposit or paypal prior to the appointment), which is then taken off your total gown price should your proceed with commissioning me to create your gown.  There is still no obligation to book me as your bridal dressmaker at this time and should you decide to go elsewhere you have still received the valuable one-on-one advice on designs and fabric that many bridal stores don’t offer.

After this appointment a further non refundable part payment to reach a total of $700 is required to book in time for me to create your gown, no time is reserved prior to receiving this payment.  About 4-5 months before your wedding I draft a custom pattern based on the agreed design and your measurements.  From this I create a mock up of the basic design in either a calico or a similar but less expensive fabric to your gown.  We then meet for one fitting of this mock up.  Based on this fitting I then adjust the pattern and start work on creating your actual gown.  During the time I’m working on your actual gown there will be approximately 2-3 fittings.  Provided there is availability I prefer to schedule it so that your gown is complete and ready to be collected 3 weeks before your big day.

Do you outsource any of your sewing?

Unlike the majority of bridal gown businesses I do not hire staff to do any of the sewing or pattern making for me.  Absolutely all of the gown with the exception of belts and fabric covered buttons is made by me, so you can be sure that my attention to detail has been had throughout your entire gown.

 

I only have a few pictures of bits and pieces of ideas that I like – can you work with that?

Absolutely!  For all of my custom gowns I work on every element of the gown starting from the drafting of a unique pattern through to the sewing of all of the details on the gown. I don’t need a pattern to be provided and am able to use pieces of a variety of images to come up with your overall gown design.

 

Do you provide fabrics?

I do have fabric suppliers that I use to create most gown designs including high quality silks and a limited range of laces, however if you have your heart set on a specific lace or other fabric this may need to be provided by yourself so that you can go out and hand select the perfect piece for the vision you have for your gown (and I can point you in the right direction and offer plenty of advice before you hit the shops!).

 

I don’t live in Brisbane but would still love a custom Silver Sixpence gown – is this possible?

It sure is! I can either work with you via email to come up with the design and create your gown in a standard size or if you are able to come up for one fitting I also offer a semi made to measure service where I create a calico mock up based on provided measurements.  We then have that one in person fitting where you can decide all of the details such as exactly where you would like necklines to sit, hem length or even how full the skirt is.  Based on that fitting I then sew up your gown which allows for an almost custom fit.

 

Do you offer alterations services?

No unfortunately I don’t offer alterations for any gowns, only full made to measure for gowns made by me.

 

I really like one of the Silver Sixpence label dresses but I’d love to change a couple of things about it. Can I do that?
